Well, I admit that we have been naughty on the weekends.  We have Maccas for lunch or lunches.  It's just so easy to duck down to Maccas when you are tired from grocery shopping, putting them away and doing laundry.  Maccas is not even 5 minutes drive away.

But really, how hard can it be to buy something while grocery shopping?  Something that is a quick fix?  Well, not really.  Last weekend, I did a quick pasta with tuna sauce.  It's not somethign to rave about but edible and healthy.  Plus it's filling.  What more can you ask for?  It's not like I'm asking for a chameleon tank.

Yes, I am talking about eggs of course.

Around lunch time in our kitchen at work (we call it Clear Cafe), my colleague talked about food (what else would you talk about when in the kitchen).  I can't even remember what particular topic we were discussing but it just led to eggs.  And I said that when I eat eggs I have to not think about the state of the chickens that laid them.  I was asked what type of eggs I am buying.  See, I have been buying caged eggs forever.  I have not really thought about the type.  I assumed the household from my MIL and I didn't do any analysis of groceries that we buy.  It's a routine and always on the list.  My bad.

I learned then that caged eggs were laid by chickens that are cooped-up in a very cramped condition.  A small coop and there are three of them.  I am not even sure if they can move.  All they do all day, I suppose is to lay eggs when they can.  Which is really sad.

Growing up in the Philippines and even not in a farm, we only ever had eggs from free range chickens.  That was then. Now, my Nanay buys eggs from the market and I think they are caged eggs.

So, with everything that I have learned so far, I started buying barn-laid eggs.  I suppose, they are better than caged.  We have friends who have chooks and theirs are in a coop.  Can't have free-ranged chooks as they get to the neighbours.

I am sure there are nutritional benefits in eating non-caged eggs but my focus really is the condition of the chickens that laid them.  And I suppose when these chickens are too old to lay eggs, wait, do they get to that stage?  I don't really know but I assume they do.  And when they are, they get slaughtered to be one of those chicken breasts that we buy at the shops.  Sad and tragic really.

So while we are in the topic of eggs, I am always amazed when I get double egg-yolk in eggs.  I suppose it's no different from having twins in human.  They're just double embryo.  But to see those yolks in the pan is different.  It's amazing that the eggs are just as big as the single embryo.

This is one of our menu when it's protein night at home.  Aside from it's easy to make, it's not my dish so I don't have to cook it. Happy me.

At least once a week, we either have rib-eye steak (the sort that you buy from the super market only, not the premium cut) or lamb chops.

This is a favourite at home by the way.

One of my family's favourite meal is lasagnia.  Well, I'm sure every likes it too.  What not to like, as Joey would say.  Meat, yum.  Cheese, yum.  More meat, yum!

But I actually have not tried making one yet.  I am not sure that I can do it as good as the Sara Lee that we bought.  I can cook but an average one.  Not my talent, I suppose.  We're happy with something from a box and I believe it's one of our favourites because of the taste.  Lol.

That's what we are at home this week and maybe the week after.  We have heaps and heaps of oranges that our dessert and drinks would revolved around this fruit.  I am not complaining.  One, we didn't buy them.  Two Mcj does all the work.  Haha.

Yesterday, he made the makings of the tart fillings as practice.  Not bad.  I am having some while writing - with ice cream.

We will have our vitamin c overload.

Tuesday 6 October 2015

uh, i am not really sure if it is a cake but I have never heard of tea muffin so it is a cake for me.  Anyway, I bought a tray of this at costco just to try and low and behold.  It is yummy.  The frosting is not too sweet or overpowering.  Have to buy it again sometime.

Good for afternoon tea.  Just a bit messy to eat.

We visited a Filipino restaurant last weekend to try their food.  I've been missing them.

Crispy Pata

Sinigang na Isda

Pinakbet

Halo-halo

Yum!  I didn't eat much then and now I want them all again.

Sunday 27 September 2015

What are you waiting for?  It's breakfast time.
This recipe is very easy to make.  This is an ilonggo style recipe and I didn't really follow it to the letter.  But it's still yummy.

Mcj bought me 5 kilos of sticky rice and I have to use it lest it goes to waste so at least once a month I think of a recipe that I can use sticky rice.  So far, I've made this three times now and nobody has complained.
What's in it:
Sticky rice
Jasmine rice
Peas
Capcicum
Onion
Garlic
chicken
Chorizo

You can put seafood and pork in it too, if you want.

Sunday 20 September 2015

Recently, I have been craving of filipino food.  Any food at all.  Remember, I am not counting calories or thinking of any forms of diet here.  It's just to eat something that I really like and will fill me up.

With dried fish that my friend gave me.  Already cooked as I have not really braved up to cook some at home because of the stench.

These are some of the food that my family consumed in their little picnic in the new hut that they have built in the lot purchased recently.  While we can't afford to build our dream house, a small shelter will do.

I found this article on the local paper a while back and I think it is worth sharing.  The article is exercising using a barre.  Mind you, I have to check what really a barre is.  I know that it is a bar but why a different spelling.  Now, I know.  Anyway, it's for toning the bottom.  So anyone out there who wants a tight bottom, here's for you.  Thanks to our local paper by the way.

These exercises are quite easy.  I don't have a bar at home so I just use anything that is permanent to support me while performing these.  The number two item is my favourite so far.  It really burns my legs and thighs.

Saturday 12 September 2015

I dabbled on yoga recently, until everything got busy and hectic that I have lapsed for more than a week now.

How did I start?  With the help of youtube of course.  I've come across a video of yoga for begginers and I quite like it.  I searched other videos of the same yogi and did them too.  I recently started the 30 day challenge and I have yet to embark on day 5.

Aside from the movement that I quite like - it stretches me of course.  I also like that it pushes me and my endurance.  I still haven't quite master the art of breathing yet.  I have problem sometimes - I feel that I was not breathing at all.

If interested, try this one.

yes, it's The French toast.  The current weekend breakfast favourite.  Loaded with carbo of course but since we don't have cooked breakfast on weekdays, nobody is complaining.  I must say, I like it with scrambled eggs on top.  Eggy, hmmm.

Saturday 5 September 2015

the school was selling father's day presents but the tatapilla and I agreed that since we already bought dad his present last weekend, we only need to make him breakfast.

recently, he has developed liking to french toast ( with tomato sauce, he said).  so we are going to make some tomorrow.

I have not actually made them at home.  I know they are simple enough to make.  bread, eggs, milk, oil for frying and sugar for dusting... and fruit for toppings.

I learned that french toast is also called eggy bread, german toast, gypsy bread or spanish toast.

overtime, french toast has several variations and wikipedia said that the hong-long style french toast was documented as the top-50 most delicious food.

i tell you about mine next time.

Saturday 29 August 2015

Ever tried a peanut butter ice cream?  The first time I tried it, it was in a stick and so yummy.  I thought I was hooked and I say yes.  But being not so fond of sweets, I don't crave it.

I was at the shops and thinking of something new and tried this.  Hmmmm.. didn't go down well with my Tatapilla.  I tried it myself and it's just not right.  It didn't taste like the other brand.  I think, I'll give this a ditch, thaw it out and pour it down the bin.

Studies suggest to eat fish at least twice a week to get the recommended amount of Omega 3 in your diet.  If we cant get this from your diet, supplement vitamins are recommended.  for some reason I associate Omega 3 with fish out tablets and such. Why, you would ask?

We used to buy fresh fish and make fish and chips ourselves. Well, Mcj at least makes the fish and chips.  We would just buy frozen chips as the few times we attempted to make our own, it didn't turn out alright.

Blurb

Life in a home with gluten-free diet, preventing Diabetes 2 and trying to be lactose-free. And a little bit fussy child. It sounds difficult and complicated but not really. It's been roughly ten years on - we have a lot of practice.
